Pixelmon Server Hosting — Requirements & Setup Guide (2026)
Pixelmon (Pixelmon Reforged) is the veteran Pokémon mod — a decade of content: 900+ Pokémon, gyms, breeding, raids, and a full battle system faithful to the games. That depth is why communities still choose it over lighter alternatives, and why it asks a bit more from a server.
How much RAM does a Pixelmon server need?
| Players | RAM |
|---|---|
| 2–4 friends | 6 GB |
| 5–15 players | 8 GB |
| Public server with plugins/sidemods | 10–12 GB |
One giant mod behaves differently from 300 small ones: Pixelmon’s cost is front-loaded (model/data registration at boot) and scales with living entities. NPC trainers, ranch blocks, and dense spawn areas add up faster than exploring does.
Setup walkthrough
- Start from the official Pixelmon modpack — one click on FadeHost gives you the server files with the right Forge build. Version-match clients exactly; Pixelmon’s network protocol changes between releases.
- First boot takes a few minutes — Pixelmon registers every species, move, and model before the world loads. Interrupting it is the classic cause of half-initialized configs.
- Tune spawning with the Better Spawner (
pixelmon.hocon+config/pixelmon/spawning/). The defaults are sane; the settings communities actually change arespawnsPerPass(density), legendary spawn ticks, and shiny odds. - Pregen your hunting grounds — biome-specific spawns send players sprinting to rare biomes on day one.
chunky radius 3000while the server is empty. - Back up like you mean it. Every caught Pokémon lives in world/player data — a rolled-back world hurts a Pixelmon community more than almost any pack. FadeHost snapshots daily; before big version updates, take a manual one too.
Common Pixelmon server issues
Boot hangs at model registration → not a hang. Watch RAM: if the server OOMs during boot, it needs more memory for registration even if steady-state usage looks fine — this is why we don’t recommend 4 GB for Pixelmon.
“Mismatched mod version” on join → exact-version rule again. The launcher’s “latest” and your server’s pinned build drift apart quickly.
TPS drops around ranches and day-cares → passive breeding entities tick constantly. Cap ranch blocks per player or spread them across chunks.
Pixelmon or Cobblemon?
Hosting-wise: Cobblemon runs the same player count roughly one RAM tier lighter and updates faster; Pixelmon has more systems (raids, gyms, TCG) and a decade of server-side ecosystem. Communities that want the full Pokémon-game loop pick Pixelmon; casual friend groups increasingly start with Cobblemon.
Cost to run one
8 GB of Pixelmon on FadeHost is $9.50/month ($2.50 base + 7 GB at $1/GB), daily backups and DDoS protection included. The 7-day free trial is plenty to import your team and stress-test a raid night before spending anything.
