# Move a server to another region

> Europe to North America or back: a backup, a new server in the other region, a restore, and the address change.

A server runs where it was created. To move it, you create one in the other region and move the data across, which is a backup and a restore.

## Move it

1. **Backups** on the old server: take a fresh backup.
2. Create a new server in the other region with the same software, version and RAM. Do not start it yet.
3. On the new server, **Backups**: the account's backups are listed; **Restore Backup** from the old server's snapshot into the new one. (If the snapshot is not listed for the new server, use **Clone Server from Backup** on the old one, then change the clone's region setting if offered, or download the world and upload it. See [Upload a world](/docs/upload-a-world/).)
4. Start the new server and check the console.
5. Point players and your domain at the new address (**Settings**, **General**, **Your own domain** shows the new SRV target). Keep the old one up for a day, then delete it.

## Which region

Players see 20 to 60 ms on the same continent and 90 to 150 ms across the Atlantic. Host where most of the group is; a split group picks the side with the players who play most.

## Good to know

- The RAM pool is account-wide, so two servers running at once during the move both take their share. Stop the old one once the new one is verified.
- Custom domains and the join page follow the server they are set on; move them to the new server in its settings.
