# Skyblock modpacks: get the sky world, not a normal one

> Why a skyblock pack can spawn you in a normal overworld, which world type each pack needs, and how to set it and regenerate the world.

Skyblock packs (All the Mods 9 and 10 To the Sky, Sky Bees, Project Ozone and friends) do not change the world generator by themselves. The server has to be told to generate a sky world through the `level-type` setting, and the world has to be created after that setting is in place. If you spawn on grass instead of an island, one of those two things did not happen.

## Which world type your pack needs

Most modern skyblock packs are built on the Skyblock Builder mod and use its world type:

| Pack | World type |
|---|---|
| All the Mods 10: To the Sky | `skyblockbuilder:skyblock` |
| All the Mods 9: To the Sky | `skyblockbuilder:skyblock` |
| Sky Bees, Sky Bees 2, other packs with Skyblock Builder in `mods` | `skyblockbuilder:skyblock` |
| Packs built on Botania's Garden of Glass (Project Ozone 3 and other 1.12 packs) | `botania-skyblock` |
| SkyFactory 4, SkyFactory One (Topography picks the world) | nothing to set, the default works |
| SkyFactory 5 | nothing to set, the default works |

For a pack that is not in the table, look at the server files the pack author ships: `server.properties`, `default-server.properties` or the start script name the value when one is needed. If the pack's `mods` folder has a `SkyblockBuilder` jar, it is `skyblockbuilder:skyblock`.

## Packs installed from the panel

When you install a pack that ships its world type in its server files, FadeHost applies it for you on the first start, and the activity log shows a line like "World type set to skyblockbuilder:skyblock, what the modpack asks for". A world created after that is a sky world.

If your world was created before the type was set, it stays a normal world: Minecraft never regenerates an existing world. Follow the steps below.

## Set it yourself

1. Stop the server.
2. Open **Settings**, **Server**, find **Level Type** and enter the value from the table, for example `skyblockbuilder:skyblock`. Save.
3. If you manage `server.properties` yourself (the switch in **Settings**), edit the file in **Files** instead: set `level-type=skyblockbuilder:skyblock`. Keep a backslash before the colon if the file already writes it that way (`skyblockbuilder\:skyblock`); both spellings work.
4. Delete the world so a new one generates: in **Files**, delete the `world` folder. Take a backup first if anything in it matters; see [How to reset the world](/docs/reset-world/).
5. Start. The first boot of a big pack takes a few minutes; wait for the `Done` line, then join.

Packs on Skyblock Builder put every player on their own island by default. The commands are in the pack's guide, but the two you need first are `/skyblock spawn` to get back to spawn and `/skyblock create` to start your island if you did not get one when you joined.

## Check that it worked

- The console prints `Preparing level "world"` without generating thousands of chunks, and the first join lands you on an island or on the spawn platform.
- In **Files**, `world/level.dat` is small and the region files stay small: an empty sky world barely grows until people build.
- The whitelist, operators and RAM settings are untouched by any of this. Only the world changed.

## Common mistakes

- **Setting the type and keeping the old world.** The most frequent one. The setting only applies to a world that does not exist yet.
- **A typo in the value.** Minecraft ignores an unknown world type and logs `Failed to parse level-type` in the console, then generates a normal world. Copy the value from the table.
- **Setting it on a Paper or vanilla server.** These world types come from mods. The server has to run the pack's mod loader (NeoForge, Forge or Fabric, set in **Server Software**) with the pack installed.
- **Old worlds from another host.** A world imported from elsewhere keeps the generator it was created with. If it was a sky world there, it stays one here, whatever the setting says.
