Regions and moving an app

A bot or app runs in one region. On a paid plan you choose it when you create the app and you can move the app later. A free app is placed wherever there is room for it.

Picking a region

The region is one of the fields in the create dialog’s last step, in the list next to the app’s name. Pick the one closest to the people or the servers your app talks to.

On the free plan there is no region field. Free apps run where there is room for them, and the app’s page tells you afterwards where it ended up.

Moving a paid app

The region sits on the app’s Settings tab, under the app’s name and repository settings.

  1. Open the app, then Settings.
  2. Find the region. It says which region the app runs in now.
  3. Pick another region from the list and confirm.

Before you confirm, the panel tells you what the move does to this particular app:

  • The app is stopped for about a minute while it moves, then starts again on its own.
  • Its files and everything in /data move with it.
  • Its web address stays the same.
  • A public port is tied to the machine the app runs on, so the number may be different afterwards. The app’s page shows the new one, and anything connecting to it needs the new address.
  • A database created from the app’s page stays where it is and stays reachable over your private network.
  • The first start in the new region installs the app’s dependencies again, so give it a little longer than a normal restart.

You can start one move an hour per app.

When a move will not start

The list says why a region is not available instead of failing after you confirm.

  • The region is not taking apps right now, or has no room for an app of this size. Try another region, or try again later.
  • The app is deploying or restoring. A move waits until that has finished.
  • The app is already being moved. Wait for that to finish.
  • The app is paused. The reason is on its page.

Why a free app cannot move

Free apps run wherever there is room for them, so there is nothing to choose and nothing to move. On a paid plan you pick the region, and you can move the app to another one later. The free plan covers the other differences.

Moving a game server instead

This page is about hosted bots and apps. A Minecraft server moves a different way, with a backup and a restore: see Move a server to another region.
